If we have established that Satan
himself did not create sin, what part has he played in the evolution
of it—from a concept into the reality of sin that we see in the
world today? Satan, also called the Devil, was originally named
Lucifer, and was one of the three arch angels mentioned by
Scriptures, along with Gabriel and Michael. There are some who have
put forth that these three angels commandeered the rest of the
heavenly host, with one-third of all angels being under the
authority of each arch angel. In turn, each of these three arch
angels are/were answerable to one person in the Godhead. Michael
answers to the Father, being the “prince” of the people of
Israel, who are also the bride of the Father—through whom God would
bring forth His Son, the Lord Jesus. Michael is the “great
prince,” who stands up and does spiritual battle for God’s
people; and He is the one who will eventually “cast out”
Satan from the heavens and bring about his final defeat.
Dan 10:13 But the prince of the
kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo,
Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I
remained there with the kings of Persia.
Dan 10:21 But I will shew thee that
which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that
holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince.
Dan 12:1 And at that time shall
Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children
of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as
never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at
that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be
found written in the book.
Jude 1:9 Yet Michael the
archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the
body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but
said, The Lord rebuke thee.
Rev 12:1 And there appeared a great
wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under
her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:
2 And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained
to be delivered.
3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great
red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns
upon his heads.
4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and
did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman
which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as
it was born.
5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all
nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God,
and to his throne.
6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place
prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two
hundred and threescore days.
7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought
against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in
heaven.
9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the
Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was
cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come
salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power
of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which
accused them before our God day and night.
Gabriel, it is taught, is answerable
to the Holy Spirit, being the messenger to God’s people, and the one
sent to give understanding in spiritual things—just as the Holy
Spirit does for the Church. Gabriel’s messages are always of peace
and hope for God’s people, showing them how God will fulfill His
promises both to Israel and the Church.
Dan 8:15 And it came to pass, when I,
even I Daniel, had seen the vision, and sought for the meaning,
then, behold, there stood before me as the appearance of a man.
16 And I heard a man's voice between the banks of Ulai, which
called, and said, Gabriel, make this man to understand the
vision.
Dan 9:21 Yea, whiles I was speaking
in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at
the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the
time of the evening oblation.
22 And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I
am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding.
Luke 1:11 And there appeared unto him
an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of
incense.
12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon
him.
13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer
is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou
shalt call his name John.
14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at
his birth.
15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink
neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy
Ghost, even from his mother's womb.
16 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord
their God.
17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to
turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient
to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the
Lord.
18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for
I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.
19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that
stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to
shew thee these glad tidings.
Luke 1:26 And in the sixth month
the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named
Nazareth,
27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the
house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art
highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among
women.
29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in
her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found
favour with God.
31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a
son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest:
and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his
kingdom there shall be no end.
34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know
not a man?
35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall
come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee:
therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be
called the Son of God.
36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son
in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called
barren.
37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.
38 And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me
according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
John 14:26 But the Comforter,
which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he
shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your
remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you
Lucifer, it is purposed, before his
fall, was under the direction of the Son of God. He stood in the
presence of the Divine Word, and had the privilege of being His
general over one-third of the angelic host. His attributes are much
like the Son’s, who is the manifestation of the Invisible God;
Lucifer was “full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty”; he is
associated with precious jewels and gold; he has the ability to
produce enchanting music; and he is also associated with God’s
creation, and was in Eden even before his fall. The Scriptures teach
that when God brought about His created world “all the sons of
God shouted for joy.” The gifts and attributes that he was
created with are still employed as the major forces of his kingdom
of darkness: sensual music that uses rebellious lyrics has lead this
and other generations of people away from God; material riches and
merchandise have become the idols of mankind; vain beauty is
worshipped, and demonic wisdom has lead man from the truth of God.
Eze 28:12 Son of man, take up a
lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the
Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in
beauty.
13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every
precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the
diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the
emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy
tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou
wast created.
14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have
set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast
walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast
created, till iniquity was found in thee.
16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst
of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast
thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee,
O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.
Job 38:4 Where wast thou when I laid
the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
5 Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath
stretched the line upon it?
6 Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the
corner stone thereof;
7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God
shouted for joy?
James 3:15 This wisdom descendeth not
from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
What might we say bought about the
rebellion of this highly gifted, wise, and powerful arch angel, who
enjoyed such an exalted position? The Scripture proclaims—“Thine
heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy
wisdom by reason of thy brightness”; Lucifer’s downfall was
spiritual pride. Lucifer became dissatisfied with the position that
he enjoyed; and came to believe in his heart that instead of being a
servant to the Son, he could be a god himself—one-third of the
angels already being under his authority. I believe as he stood in
the presence of the Son of God, who the Scripture says is “meek
and lowly in heart,” he said to himself ‘I am as good as, or
better than this weak God that I serve.’ He might have thought
that he had a better means of ruling than that of love, humility,
submission, meekness, and being a leader by being a servant. He
thought of himself as being wise and powerful, and so beautiful that
he deserved to be worshipped; and if he became as God, his kingdom
would be of forced obedience to him.
Isa 14:12 How art thou fallen from
heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the
ground, which didst weaken the nations!
13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven,
I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also
upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like
the most High.
15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit
Eze 28:17 Thine heart was lifted
up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason
of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay
thee before kings, that they may behold thee.
In contrast, see what the Scripture
says of Christ as He walked this earth.
Isa 53:2 For he shall grow up before him as a
tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground:
he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we
shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
Matt 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and
learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall
find rest unto your souls.
Phil 2:5 Let this mind be in you,
which was also in Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal
with God:
7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form
of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and
became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
John 6:38 For I came down from
heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent
me.
John 13:3 Jesus knowing that the
Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come
from God, and went to God;
4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a
towel, and girded himself.
5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the
disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was
girded.
6 Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord,
dost thou wash my feet?
7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now;
but thou shalt know hereafter.
8 Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus
answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.
9 Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my
hands and my head.
10 Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash
his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.
11 For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not
all clean.
12 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments,
and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done
to you?
13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.
14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also
ought to wash one another's feet.
(Can anyone picture the devil washing somebody’s feet?)
Matt 23:10 Neither be ye called
masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that
shall humble himself shall be exalted.
At what point did Lucifer actually sin? His
sin began as every sin does—in the heart. When he began to take
pride in his wisdom and beauty, then he began to seriously
contemplate rebelling against God’s will and purpose for him; and it
was then that the first sin was spawned. Furthermore, how may we say
that pride led him to such a disastrous course? Pride is
self-deception; it is taking vain glory in the gifts and attributes
which God gives. When Lucifer began to think highly of himself—as if
he had something to do with how beautiful and wise he was—he stole
from God the glory that was due to the Creator alone. Pride is a
lie, and as such it blinds our thinking; we lose our ability to
reason correctly, and it leads us into greater sins. Now, as
concerning the specific time when his rebellion became open, the
Scriptures indicate that it was sometime after the creation of man.
It was then that he saw the perfect opportunity for his kingdom of
darkness; and this newly created world provided the perfect
environment in which to set up his system of materialism, vanity,
and forced subjection. The angels under his command, as a whole,
followed him, becoming the evil spirits and demons that have made
his rule universal over the earth. As Absalom persuaded Israel to
abandon David as their king,
so these angels were enamored by Lucifer’s wisdom and beauty, and
abandoned their true Lord, the Son of God. They may also have been
lured into thinking that they would enjoy a greater status under
Lucifer’s reign. Now, we will not try to answer all of the questions
of why God allowed Lucifer’s rebellion to happen at this time—we
will try to satisfy those questions later; however, we do see that
Lucifer became the father of sin in that he spawned
the first sin; and in that he lead others to sin with him—first,
wholly one-third of the angels, and then man.
Matt 15:19 For out of the heart
proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications,
thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
James 1:14 But every man is tempted,
when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and
sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
Prov 16:18 Pride goeth before
destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
Oba 1:3 The pride of thine heart
hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the
rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall
bring me down to the ground?
1 Cor 4:7 For who maketh thee to
differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive?
now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst
not received it?
Rom 12:3 For I say, through the grace
given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of
himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think
soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of
faith.
Psa 42:8 I am the LORD: that is my
name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my
praise to graven images.
1 John 3:8 He that committeth sin is
of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For
this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy
the works of the devil.
Rev 12:3 And there appeared another

4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and

soon as it was born.
John 8:44 Ye are of your father
the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a
murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because
there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his
own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
2 Thes 2:3 Let no man deceive you by
any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling
away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God,
or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of
God, shewing himself that he is God
