After examining all
that Jesus did for His people, and how we are brought into a saving
relationship with God, we might well suppose that our problems with
sin are over, or that we need not concern ourselves with its
influence upon our lives. However, such a careless attitude is not
taught in Scripture, but contra-wise, is even warned against. Christ
did not come just to save His people from the consequences of sin;
He came to same them “from their sins.” Sin will forever be
sin. Sin is forever against God, cruel to those we sin against, and
destructive to ourselves. We might even say that sin, in many ways,
is more of a problem for believers than for those who have never
known Christ. As believers in Jesus we need not fear the eternal
consequences of our sin, nor do we live in fear of God’s wrath if we
break one of His laws; however, as those who have come to know and
love God, we are more keenly aware of what sin is, what it does to
ourselves and others, and what it cost Jesus to obtain our
forgiveness. Those who still live in darkness are blind to the
awfulness of sin and of their impending doom. Though they may be
somewhat troubled by the effects of sin upon their lives, because of
their lustful natures, they still seek after it and have pleasure in
it. Sinful pleasures are what bring them satisfaction, if only for a
brief time. The Bible never says that sin is not pleasurable, but
that it only satisfies “for a season.”
Rom 6:1 What shall
we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer
therein?
Mat 1:21 And she
shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for
he shall save his people from their sins.
Rom 8:1 There is
therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who
walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me
free from the law of sin and death.
3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the
flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and
for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who
walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Rom 4:4 Now to him
that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.
5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth
the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto
whom God imputeth righteousness without works,
7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and
whose sins are covered.
8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
Heb 8:12 For I will
be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their
iniquities will I remember no more.
Prov 4:14 Enter not
into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.
15 Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.
16 For they sleep not, except they have done mischief; and their
sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall.
17 For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of
violence.
18 But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth
more and more unto the perfect day.
19 The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what
they stumble
Heb 11:25 Choosing
rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy
the pleasures of sin for a season;
What then, is to be
the believer’s attitude concerning sin? Can we ever live without
sinning? What happens if we do sin? Since we are the children of
God, and God’s Spirit lives in our hearts, we should have the same
feelings about sin that God does. The Scriptures declare that God
loves righteousness and hates wickedness, and as His children we
need to learn to do the same. Although we now have a spiritual
inclination against sin, we soon learn that avoiding wickedness and
obeying God is easier said than done. As believers, we have a desire
for true righteousness, but we still struggle against the sin nature
within our flesh. Even the Apostle Paul experienced this turmoil
against the forces of sin and cried out, “O wretched man that I
am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?”
Psa 45:6 Thy
throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a
right sceptre.
7 Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore
God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy
fellows.
Psa 97:10 Ye
that love the LORD, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his
saints; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.
2 Pet 3:18 But
grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus
Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
Rom 7:14 For we
know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I
not; but what I hate, that do I.
16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that
it is good.
17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good
thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which
is good I find not.
19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would
not, that I do.
20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin
that dwelleth in me.
21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present
with me.
22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of
my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is
in my members.
24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of
this death?
25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind
I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
What then, may we
expect to be the normal experience of a true Christian concerning
sin? First, because we have the nature of God within us, we cannot
live a life of continual, unremorseful sin. The Scriptures declare,
“that whosoever is born of God sinneth not”; not meaning that
we never sin, because the Word of God also says, “If we say that
we have no sin, we deceive ourselves”; but it means our new life
in Christ is leading us away from a lifestyle of sin towards a holy
life in God. When we repented and received Christ for salvation,
that was not a ‘once in a lifetime’ experience; because as a child
of God we will always be repenting—turning from an ever deeper
understanding about sin, toward an ever deeper understanding of
Christ. Therefore, when we do recognize sin in our life, what are we
to do about it? The Bible teaches that as a believer we need to make
an open and honest confession before God concerning our sins,
faults, and failures. We should not try to hide our wrong doings,
bad attitudes, and sinful behavior, with the idea that we need to be
perfect before God. We were sinners when God saved us, and He is
quite aware of the problems we still have in avoiding sin. Christ’s
blood has already atoned for all the sins that we will ever commit;
but honesty before God is the prerequisite for having our conscience
cleared and our hearts purified from the contamination of sin.
1 John 5:18 We
know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is
begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him
not.
1 John 3:6
Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not
seen him, neither known him.
7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth
righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from
the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested,
that he might destroy the works of the devil.
9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed
remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of
the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither
he that loveth not his brother.
1 Cor 15:34
Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the
knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.
1 John 1:8 If we
say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not
in us.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our
sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his
word is not in us.
1 John 2:1 My
little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And
if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ
the righteous:
2 And he is the
propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for
the sins of the whole world.
Psa 32:5 I
acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I
said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou
forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.
When God’s Spirit
speaks to us about some problem area in our life, we shouldn’t deny,
or try to reason away what He is trying to tell us. When we dispute
with God over something that displeases Him, we are, in effect,
accusing Him of being unrighteous. Our Heavenly Father only wants
what is best for us, and He is grieved when we allow sin to have
dominion in our lives. He will rebuke, and even chasten us until we
confess our sins and turn from those things that are destroying our
lives. However, there is a danger for those who stubbornly refuse to
hear God’s voice or heed His rebukes. He does allow the natural
consequences of our sin to bear their fruit in our lives; and He
will take away the peace and joy we have come to know in Christ,
until we once again repent. The price we pay to hold onto our sin is
never worth it; we can never again find satisfaction in sin, and we
lose all the blessings that we have come to know in Christ by trying
to resist God’s admonishment.
Eph 5:1 Be ye
therefore followers of God, as dear children;
2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given
himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a
sweetsmelling savour.
3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not
be once named among you, as becometh saints;
4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are
not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.
5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor
covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the
kingdom of Christ and of God.
6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these
things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them.
8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord:
walk as children of light:
9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and
righteousness and truth;)
10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but
rather reprove them.
12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of
them in secret.
13 But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the
light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.
14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from
the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.
15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,
16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of
the Lord is.
1 Tim 5:20 Them
that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.
Heb 12:5 And ye
have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto
children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord,
nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:
6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son
whom he receiveth.
7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for
what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then
are ye bastards, and not sons.
9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us,
and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in
subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?
10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own
pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of
his holiness.
Heb 3:12 Take
heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of
unbelief, in departing from the living God.
13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day;
lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
Psa 19:13 Keep
back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have
dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be
innocent from the great transgression.
Gal 6:7 Be not
deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall
he also reap.
8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption;
but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life
everlasting.
Heb 10:26 For if
we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the
truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery
indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.
28 He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three
witnesses:
29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought
worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted
the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy
thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I
will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his
people.
31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living
God.
Heb 12:1 Wherefore
seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of
witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth
so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is
set before us,
2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for
the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the
shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners
against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.
Prov 1:23 Turn
you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I
will make known my words unto you.
Jas 4:7 Submit
yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from
you.
8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your
hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to
mourning, and your joy to heaviness.
10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you
up.
2 Pet 1:9 But he
that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and
hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your
calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never
fall:
11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly
into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Of course, as with
salvation, overcoming sin is not something we can do on our own. It
is God who convicts and convinces us of sin, and it is God who gives
us the grace to repent. In ourselves, we have no power to overcome
sin, but we “through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the
body.” Just as we looked, by faith, upon Jesus dying for our
sins to save us, even so we now look “unto Jesus the author and
finisher of our faith,” as both our example in overcoming sin,
and as the One who strengthens us and gives us victory over it.
Therefore, as believers, we must continually be on guard and
struggle against the forces of sin in our lives, but we also realize
that we do not struggle alone; and that God has given us the
resources, which, if we avail ourselves, will make us overcomers
against sin.
Rom 8:12 Therefore,
brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye
through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons
of God.
15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but
ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba,
Father.
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are
the children of God:
Heb 12:2 Looking
unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy
that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and
is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners
against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.
1 John 5:3 For this
is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his
commandments are not grievous.
4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is
the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth
that Jesus is the Son of God?
2 Pet
1:1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them
that have obtained like precious faith with us through the
righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:
2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of
God, and of Jesus our Lord,
3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things
that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him
that hath called us to glory and virtue:
4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious
promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature,
having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
