When
God delivered Israel from Egyptian bondage, there was no
mistaking who had set them free. Upon Mt. Sinai Jehovah
had revealed Himself to them in a visible and audible
way. He made it plain to them that their God was the one
true God. Therefore, they were commanded not to worship
any other god but the LORD. We may wonder how anyone
could ignore the miracles that Israel saw, forget their
own God, and turn to false gods; but that indeed was the
sad fact concerning this nation. Throughout their
history, as recorded in the Scriptures, we see them
forsaking the LORD and worshipping the false gods of the
heathen people around them. Eventually, God brought
great suffering upon them and removed them from the
Promised Land for breaking this premier commandment.
Exo 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Deut 8:19 And it shall be, if thou do at all forget
the LORD thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve
them, and worship them, I testify against you this day
that ye shall surely perish.
20 As the nations which the LORD destroyeth before your
face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be
obedient unto the voice of the LORD your God.

Chr 36:14 Moreover all the chief of the priests, and
the people, transgressed very much after all the
abominations of the heathen; and polluted the house
of the LORD which he had hallowed in Jerusalem.
15 And the LORD God of their fathers sent to them by his
messengers, rising up betimes, and sending; because he
had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place:
16 But they mocked the messengers of God, and
despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the
wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there
was no remedy.
Israel was commanded not to worship any god but the
Lord, not only because He is the True and Living God;
and because of what He had done for them; but because
turning from God is turning from all truth and goodness
into falsehood and spiritual darkness. When we view
those who worship gods other than the LORD, we are
dismayed at the meaningless forms of worship, the often
bizarre rituals that they practice, and the emptiness of
those who are the followers of these gods. God had led
Israel out of Egyptian bondage into the land of freedom
and blessings. Israel’s only protection and source of
blessing came from the LORD, and turning from Him would
lead them back into bondage and misery.
Psa 96:4 For the LORD is great, and greatly to be
praised: he is to be feared above all gods.
5 For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the
LORD made the heavens.

King 18:25 And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal,
Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it
first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your
gods, but put no fire under.
26 And they took the bullock which was given them, and
they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from
morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us.
But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they
leaped upon the altar which was made.
27 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them,
and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is
talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or
peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked.
28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after
their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood
gushed out upon them.
29 And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they
prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening
sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to
answer, nor any that regarded.

King 24:10 At that time the servants of
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against
Jerusalem, and the city was besieged.
11 And Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came against the
city, and his servants did besiege it.
12 And Jehoiachin the king of Judah went out to the king
of Babylon, he, and his mother, and his servants, and
his princes, and his officers: and the king of Babylon
took him in the eighth year of his reign.
13 And he carried out thence all the treasures of the
house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king's
house, and cut in pieces all the vessels of gold which
Solomon king of Israel had made in the temple of the
LORD, as the LORD had said.
14 And he carried away all Jerusalem, and all the
princes, and all the mighty men of valour, even ten
thousand captives, and all the craftsmen and smiths:
none remained, save the poorest sort of the people of
the land.
15 And he carried away Jehoiachin to Babylon, and the
king's mother, and the king's wives, and his officers,
and the mighty of the land, those carried he into
captivity from Jerusalem to Babylon.
16 And all the men of might, even seven thousand, and
craftsmen and smiths a thousand, all that were strong
and apt for war, even them the king of Babylon brought
captive to Babylon.
For
those who have been born-again by the Spirit of God, it
would be difficult indeed to imagine them forsaking the
Lord and then to worship a false god such as Allah,
Buddha, or any one of the millions of gods that people
worship. Israel was still “in the flesh” under
the Old Covenant and was more easily lured away from
their God. Those who are Christ’s are “in the
Spirit”—born-again, indwelt, and sanctified by the
Spirit of God. God’s spirit is not going to allow us to
abandon the truth and worship any heathen gods. We often
hear of so-called professing Christians giving up their
faith and turning to other religions; but we have to
judge, by the Word of God, that they were not Christ’s
to begin with.
Rom 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the
Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you.
Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none
of his.
1
John 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the
spirits whether they are of God: because many false
prophets are gone out into the world.
2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that
confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of
God:
3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ
is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that
spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it
should come; and even now already is it in the world.
4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome
them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that
is in the world.
5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the
world, and the world heareth them.
6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he
that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the
spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
1
John 2:12 I write unto you, little children, because
your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake.
13 I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known
him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young
men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write
unto you, little children, because ye have known the
Father.
14 I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have
known him that is from the beginning. I have written
unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word
of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked
one.
1
John 2:18 Little children, it is the last time: and as
ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are
there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the
last time.
19 They went out from us, but they were not of us;
for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have
continued with us: but they went out, that they might be
made manifest that they were not all of us.
A
further aspect of this commandment toward believers—and
one that is commonly taught—concerns the worship of the
false idols of this world. The Scriptures plainly teach
that Christians can be lured into loving the world and
the things that the world offers to them. Wealth, fame,
pleasures, and the million other trinkets of time that
the world dangles before our eyes, are very real enemies
to our worship of God. The great message behind this
first commandment is that believers are to “love the
Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul,
and with all thy mind.” We are told to “keep
yourselves from idols”—those things that steal our
affections from God. Even those who fervently serve the
Lord can be so caught up in their religious good
works that they forget to love and worship the One they
are serving—our first love is to be Christ, not the work
of the church.
1
John 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that
are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of
the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh,
and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not
of the Father, but is of the world.
2
Tim 4:10 For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved
this present world, and is departed unto
Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia.
Matt 22:36 Master, which is the great commandment
in the law?
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy
God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with
all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
1
John 5:21 Little children, keep yourselves from
idols. Amen.
Col 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those
things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the
right hand of God.
2 Set your affection on things above, not on things
on the earth.
Rev 2:1 Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write;
These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in
his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven
golden candlesticks;
2 I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy
patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are
evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are
apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:
3 And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my
name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted.
4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because
thou hast left thy first love.
The
last aspect that we shall look at, and the one that is
the most troublesome to believers—is being lured away
from the truth of Christ. When we put anything in the
place of Christ as the means by which we are justified
before God or gain any favor from God, we are breaking
the first commandment of grace. When God saves an
individual, the Holy Spirit makes it very clear that we
are nothing but hell-deserving sinners; and that there
is nothing we can do apart from receiving God’s mercy
and grace in Christ to be saved. Those who are dead in
trespasses and sins can do nothing that will ever please
God or atone for their own sins. God must cause our
blinded eyes to see only Christ upon the cross as our
sin bearer and substitute.
Gal 1:6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him
that called you into the grace of Christ unto another
gospel:
7 Which is not another; but there be some that
trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
Gal 4:8 Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did
service unto them which by nature are no gods.
9 But now, after that ye have known God, or
rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak
and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be
in bondage?
Eph 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in
trespasses and sins;
2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course
of this world, according to the prince of the power of
the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of
disobedience:
3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times
past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires
of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the
children of wrath, even as others.
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love
wherewith he loved us,
5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us
together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit
together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
7 That in the ages to come he might shew the
exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us
through Christ Jesus.
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that
not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Tit 3:3 For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish,
disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and
pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and
hating one another.
4 But after that the kindness and love of God our
Saviour toward man appeared,
5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done,
but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing
of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ
our Saviour;
7 That being justified by his grace, we should be
made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
Those who have truly been saved by the grace of God
understand what we have just put forth. However, the
problem with most believers, is that we turn again to
the false gods we worshipped in the flesh. Even as
Israel made them molten calves while Moses was on Mt.
Sinai and declared “These be thy gods, O Israel,
which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt”;
even so as believers we are prone to return to those
false gods of the flesh. We forget what God has done
for us and begin to think that there is some worthiness
in ourselves or some good works we have done that brings
us some merit with God. When we begin to think of
ourselves as having some self-righteousness—we fall from
grace; when we begin to think that we have done
something that brings us favor with God—we fall from
grace; when we begin to think that by obeying some
external laws or rituals God will bless us—we fall from
grace. Our salvation is in Christ alone and our present
standing before God is in Christ alone.
Exo 32:1 And when the people saw that Moses delayed to
come down out of the mount, the people gathered
themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up,
make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this
Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of
Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.
2 And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden
earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your
sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.
3 And all the people brake off the golden earrings which
were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron.
4 And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it
with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf:
and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which
brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
Gal 2:1 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you,
that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes
Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified
among you?
2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the
Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of
faith?
3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are
ye now made perfect by the flesh?
Gal 5:4 Christ is become of no effect unto you,
whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen
from grace.
5 For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of
righteousness by faith.
6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth
anything, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by
love.
Rom 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have
peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
2 By whom also we have access by faith into this
grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the
glory of God.
