Having studied the origin of the Ten Commandments, to
whom, and for what reasons they were given, let us make
some applications for us “upon whom the ends of the
world are come.” We understand that “whatsoever
things were written aforetime were written for our
learning,” therefore, we cannot dismiss everything
about the Old Covenant just because it does not apply to
us now. God has lessons for us in all of the Old
Testament, and those that disregard its teachings are
depriving themselves of a great store of understanding.
In particular then, how may we apply the Ten
Commandments to the life of believers? While we all
understand that there is a moral element to be found in
those Ten Laws, even more importantly, what are the spiritual
implications for the child of God?
1
Cor 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for
ensamples: and they are written for our admonition,
upon whom the ends of the world are come.
Rom 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime
were written for our learning, that we through
patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
To
answer the preceding questions let us therefore make an
exegesis of the Ten Commandments as they were given by
God to Israel upon Mt. Sinai, and then make an
application to us who are under grace.
i. God spake all these
words.
Having already examined the circumstances under which
God gave the Ten Commandments to Israel, we will not try
to be excessively redundant. We know that God first gave
this law in an audible voice, but the children of Israel
could not endure hearing Him speak directly to them.
Later, God gave them to Moses in the form of stone
tablets—once God made the tablets and wrote upon and
once Moses did. In both forms of receiving them, the
people did not have the spiritual eyes and ears to
comprehend the great heart and purpose of God in giving
to them this law. Also, they had no ability to keep the
spirit of the law because they had no spiritual
nature—they were spiritually dead, as all men are apart
from Christ. What the stone tablets did however, was to
provide Israel in the flesh with carnal commandments
that could be obeyed by the natural man.
Exo 20:1 And God spake all these words, saying,
Exo 20:18 And all the people saw the thunderings, and
the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the
mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they
removed, and stood afar off.
19 And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we
will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we
die.
Matt 13:13 Therefore speak I to them
(Israel) in parables: because they seeing see not;
and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.
14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias,
which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not
understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not
perceive:
15 For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their
ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have
closed; lest at any time they should see with their
eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand
with their heart, and should be converted, and I should
heal them.
2
Cor 3:12 Seeing then that we have such hope, we use
great plainness of speech:
13 And not as Moses, which put a vail over his face,
that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to
the end of that which is abolished:
14 But their minds were blinded: for until
this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the
reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in
Christ.
15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the
vail is upon their heart.
Col 2:13 And you, being dead in your sins and the
uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened
together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
1
Cor 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things
of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto
him: neither can he know them, because they are
spiritually discerned.
Heb 9:10 Which stood only in meats and drinks, and
divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on
them until the time of reformation.
In
contrast to the people of Israel, those who are in
Christ do have spiritual eyes and ears because they have
been born-again by the Spirit of God.
When God spoke to Israel it brought fear to them; but
for those in Christ, His voice is the joy and rejoicing
of our hearts. The written law of God brought
condemnation to the children of Israel; but to those in
Christ, the Word that God speaks to our hearts brings
life. The Word of God is no longer to us just tables of
stone or dried parchments that have no life; but it is
the voice of our Heavenly Father who speaks and teaches
us through the indwelling Holy Spirit.
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily,
verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again,
he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born
when he is old? can he enter the second time into his
mother's womb, and be born?
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee,
Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he
cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that
which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born
again.
8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou
hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it
cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is
born of the Spirit.
Matt 13:16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see:
and your ears, for they hear.
17 For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and
righteous men have desired to see those things which ye
see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things
which ye hear, and have not heard them.
Jere 15:16 Thy words were found, and I did eat them;
and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine
heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of
hosts.
1
Cor 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the
world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might
know the things that are freely given to us of God.
2
Cor 3:5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think
any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of
God;
6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new
testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the
letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.
7 But if the ministration of death, written and
engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the
children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face
of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory
was to be done away:
8 How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather
glorious?
9 For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much
more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in
glory.
10 For even that which was made glorious had no glory in
this respect, by reason of the glory that excelleth.
11 For if that which is done away was glorious, much
more that which remaineth is glorious.
John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh
profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you,
they are spirit, and they are life.
John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is
come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall
not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that
shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine,
and shall shew it unto you.
15 All things that the Father hath are mine:
therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall
shew it unto you.
ii. I am the LORD thy
God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt,
out of the house of bondage.
Here
God reveals Himself to Israel as their Deliverer. In
speaking to them He makes it clear about who He is, who
He is speaking to, and what He has done for them. When
God first revealed Himself to Moses in the burning bush,
Moses asked Him His name that he might tell the children
of Israel who had sent him to bring them out of Egypt.
Although God has many names by which He reveals Himself
to His people, God told Moses to tell them that “I AM
hath sent me unto you.” The name “I AM THAT I AM”
means “I exist because I exist”, or “The
Self-Existent One.” Here He uses “I AM” in
conjunction with “LORD” which is God’s personal
name Jehovah. We could say therefore say that He was
addressing them as “I, the Self-Existent One, am Jehovah
your God.”
Exo 20:2 I am the LORD thy God, which have
brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house
of bondage.
Exo 3:13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come
unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them,
The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they
shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto
them?
14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he
said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I
AM hath sent me unto you.
Furthermore, in revealing Himself to Israel He says—I am
the LORD “thy God.” We have already seen how God
first revealed Himself to Abraham, the father of the
Israelites. We also saw that God entered into a special
relationship with Abraham and his descendants—the
children of Israel. Therefore, God reminds them of this
special relationship which He had with no other people
of the earth. Jehovah God is not everyone’s god, neither
is He everyone’s Father. He is everyone’s Creator
and LORD, but that does not denote any personal
relationship. Many people fool themselves by thinking
they have some kind of kinship with God when they have
no basis for that relationship. Now this point we
reiterate—God was giving the Ten Commandments and the
accompanying statutes to His people.
Deut 4:5 Behold, I have taught you statutes and
judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye
should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it.
6 Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom
and your understanding in the sight of the nations,
which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely
this great nation is a wise and understanding people.
7 For what nation is there so great, who hath God so
nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things
that we call upon him for?
8 And what nation is there so great, that hath
statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law,
which I set before you this day?
Eph 2:11 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past
Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by
that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made
by hands;
12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being
aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers
from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and
without God in the world:
After revealing Himself to His people, God now reminds
them of what He has done for them— “which have
brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house
of bondage.” God wants His people to fully
understand what a great deliverance He has wrought for
them. The Israelites were in cruel bondage in the land
of Egypt and could not deliver themselves from Pharaoh
and his army. It took the power of God to free them, and
He did so without any of their help. God’s grace toward
Israel was undeserved and He is reminding them of His
great kindness as a means to solicit their obedience to
the Law which He is about to give them.
Deut 7:6 For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy
God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a
special people unto himself, above all people that are
upon the face of the earth.
7 The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor
choose you, because ye were more in number than any
people; for ye were the fewest of all people:
8 But because the LORD loved you, and because he
would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your
fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty
hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, from
the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
9 Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the
faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them
that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand
generations;
10 And repayeth them that hate him to their face, to
destroy them: he will not be slack to him that hateth
him, he will repay him to his face.
11 Thou shalt therefore keep the commandments, and
the statutes, and the judgments, which I command thee
this day, to do them.
12 Wherefore it shall come to pass, if ye hearken to
these judgments, and keep, and do them, that the LORD
thy God shall keep unto thee the covenant and the mercy
which he sware unto thy fathers:
13 And he will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply
thee: he will also bless the fruit of thy womb, and the
fruit of thy land, thy corn, and thy wine, and thine
oil, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy
sheep, in the land which he sware unto thy fathers to
give thee.
Jer 11:3 And say thou unto them, Thus saith the LORD God
of Israel; Cursed be the man that obeyeth not the words
of this covenant,
4 Which I commanded your fathers in the day that I
brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, from the
iron furnace, saying, Obey my voice, and do them,
according to all which I command you: so shall ye be my
people, and I will be your God:
5 That I may perform the oath which I have sworn
unto your fathers, to give them a land flowing with milk
and honey, as it is this day. Then answered I, and said,
So be it, O LORD.
6 Then the LORD said unto me, Proclaim all these words
in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem,
saying, Hear ye the words of this covenant, and do them.
7 For I earnestly protested unto your fathers in the
day that I brought them up out of the land of Egypt,
even unto this day, rising early and protesting, saying,
Obey my voice.
Let
us now compare what we have said about Israel and their
relationship with God to those under the New Covenant.
First of all, God has revealed Himself to us in a much
more personal way. Israel only heard God’s voice, the
disciples of Jesus saw God in the flesh. They talked
with Him, ate with Him, and touched Him. ‘But,’
someone may reply, ‘that was only His disciples that
lived when He did, He is not walking among us now.’
True, we don’t see God in a physical sense, but we can see and
know Him spiritually the same as they did. Those that
have a genuine relationship with God know Him just as
completely as they know any human being—we know what He
is like and we can have intimate fellowship with Him.
John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt
among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of
the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and
truth.
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth,
and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father
also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen
him.
8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and
it sufficeth us.
9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with
you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that
hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest
thou then, Shew us the Father?
10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the
Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak
not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he
doeth the works.
11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the
Father in me: or else believe me for the very works'
sake.
1
John 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we
have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we
have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the
Word of life;
2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it,
and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life,
which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto
you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly
our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son
Jesus Christ.
1
Pet 1:7 That the trial of your faith, being much more
precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried
with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and
glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:
8 Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though
now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy
unspeakable and full of glory:
2
Tim 1:12 For the which cause I also suffer these things:
nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have
believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep
that which I have committed unto him against that day.
Jesus is
the same God that was revealed to Israel, but in a much
greater manifestation. Even the name Jesus—which is the
Greek translation of the Hebrew name Joshua—means
“Jehovah is salvation.” When confronted by the mob who
sought to arrest Him, Jesus asked them “Whom seek
ye?” They replied “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus
then said “I am he”; and when He had said
that the Scriptures record that “they went backward,
and fell to the ground.”
Matt 1:20 But while he thought on these things, behold,
the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream,
saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto
thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her
is of the Holy Ghost.
21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt
call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from
their sins.
John 18:4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that
should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them,
Whom seek ye?
5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith
unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed
him, stood with them.
6 As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he,
they went backward, and fell to the ground.
Going on in our comparison to Israel, we made the point
that God revealed Himself to them as their God.
We also said that God’s relationship with them was
unique—He only had a covenant relationship with Israel.
The same is true for those who are in Christ. Jesus came
to “save his people from their sins.” He
did not come to save the world or those who might accept
Him. He came to save a chosen people who were ordained
“before the foundation of the world.” Israel did
not choose God and we do not choose Christ—He chose us.
Therefore, whatever meaning the teachings of Christ has
is for His people. The Bible is not written for the
world, it is written for God’s people; and only God’s
people can understand the spiritual meaning of the
Bible. Furthermore, whatever message may be found in the
Ten Commandments are only for those with spiritual eyes
who understand grace.
Acts 13:46 Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said,
It was necessary that the word of God should first have
been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and
judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we
turn to the Gentiles.
47 For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set
thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest
be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.
48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and
glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were
ordained to eternal life believed.
Eph 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings
in heavenly places in Christ:
4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the
foundation of the world, that we should be holy and
without blame before him in love:
5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of
children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the
good pleasure of his will,
6 To the praise of the glory of his grace,
wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.
John 15:16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen
you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring
forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that
whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may
give it you.
Rom 9:15 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on
whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on
whom I will have compassion.
16 So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him
that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
17 For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this
same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my
power in thee, and that my name might be declared
throughout all the earth.
18 Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have
mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.
19 Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find
fault? For who hath resisted his will?
20 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against
God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it,
Why hast thou made me thus?
21 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same
lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto
dishonour?
22 What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make
his power known, endured with much longsuffering the
vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:
23 And that he might make known the riches of his
glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore
prepared unto glory,
24 Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews
only, but also of the Gentiles?
1 Cor 2:6 Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are
perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the
princes of this world, that come to nought:
7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even
the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world
unto our glory:
8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had
they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of
glory.
9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear
heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the
things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit:
for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep
things of God.
11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the
spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God
knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world,
but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the
things that are freely given to us of God.
13 Which things also we speak, not in the words
which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost
teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of
the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him:
neither can he know them, because they are spiritually
discerned.
This
now brings up our last comparison to Israel—what has God
done for us that should motivate us to live according to
His Word? Israel was reminded of their deliverance from
Egyptian bondage by the hand of God. He reminded them of
what their slavery was like under their old masters and
how God had made them a free people. He did that so they
might reciprocate to God a token of their
gratitude—which was obedience to God’s commands. As
believers in Christ we were delivered from our bondage
to “the elements of the world;” Pharaoh was the
old man of sin who ruled over us; and the law was our
taskmaster which constantly drove us to fulfill its
demands. Christ brought us out of the world, delivered
us from the power of the flesh, and freed us from the
laws demands. Because of all that God has done for us in
Christ, we also should respond to God’s grace by
presenting our “bodies a living sacrifice, holy,
acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.”
As believers we are to yield our bodies to God and
become “servants to righteousness unto holiness.”
Gal 4:3 Even so we, when we were children, were in
bondage under the elements of the world:
4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God
sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we
might receive the adoption of sons.
John 15:19 If ye were of the world, the world would love
his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I
have chosen you out of the world, therefore the
world hateth you.
Rom 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified
with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that
henceforth we should not serve sin.
7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.
Rom 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you:
for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
Gal 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of
the law, being made a curse for us: for it is
written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
Rom 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the
mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living
sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your
reasonable service.
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye
transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may
prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect,
will of God.
Rom 6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants
of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of
doctrine which was delivered you.
18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants
of righteousness.
19 I speak after the manner of men because of the
infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your
members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto
iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to
righteousness unto holiness.
Israel was commanded to obey the Law as their response
to God and as the means to fulfill their part of the
Covenant. Their obedience is what secured for them all
of the blessings that God promised them. However, such
is not the case for believers in Christ. The Covenant of
Law demanded reciprocity; the Covenant of Grace only
appeals to our sense of gratitude. I am often amused at
the tactics of some who preach salvation by grace. They
tell their listeners that they can do nothing to be
saved except to receive Christ. However, immediately
after conversion, these converts are handed a long list
of things that they must now do in order to please God.
It is like the small print of a legal document that
contains provisions that are not openly disclosed
beforehand. Paul battled against this kind of mentality
throughout his ministry. Judaizers constantly plagued
new converts to Christ, telling them that in addition to
trusting Christ they must also be circumcised and keep
the Law of Moses. Genuine converts to Christ have a
fervent desire to please their Heavenly Father, but
those who try to bring them back under the deadness of
the Law soon quench their enthusiasm.
Acts 15:1 And certain men which came down from Judaea
taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be
circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be
saved.
2 When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small
dissension and disputation with them, they determined
that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them,
should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders
about this question.
3 And being brought on their way by the church, they
passed through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the
conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy
unto all the brethren.
4 And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were
received of the church, and of the apostles and elders,
and they declared all things that God had done with
them.
5 But there rose up certain of the sect of the
Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to
circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of
Moses.
6 And the apostles and elders came together for to
consider of this matter.
7 And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up,
and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a
good while ago God made choice among us, that the
Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel,
and believe.
8 And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness,
giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;
9 And put no difference between us and them, purifying
their hearts by faith.
10 Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon
the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor
we were able to bear?
11 But we believe that through the grace of the Lord
Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.
12 Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave
audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles
and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.
13 And after they had held their peace, James answered,
saying, Men and brethren, hearken unto me:
14 Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit
the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.
15 And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is
written,
16 After this I will return, and will build again the
tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will
build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up:
17 That the residue of men might seek after the Lord,
and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith
the Lord, who doeth all these things.
18 Known unto God are all his works from the beginning
of the world.
19 Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them,
which from among the Gentiles are turned to God:
20 But that we write unto them, that they abstain from
pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from
things strangled, and from blood.
21 For Moses of old time hath in every city them that
preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath
day.
22 Then pleased it the apostles and elders, with the
whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to
Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed
Barsabas, and Silas, chief men among the brethren:
23 And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The
apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the
brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria
and Cilicia:
24 Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which
went out from us have troubled you with words,
subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised,
and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:
25 It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one
accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved
Barnabas and Paul,
26 Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of
our Lord Jesus Christ.
27 We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall
also tell you the same things by mouth.
28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to
lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary
things;
29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from
blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication:
from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare
ye well.
Gal 3:1 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you,
that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes
Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified
among you?
2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the
Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of
faith?
3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit,
are ye now made perfect by the flesh?
4 Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be
yet in vain.
5 He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and
worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of
the law, or by the hearing of faith?
6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to
him for righteousness.
7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the
same are the children of Abraham.
8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify
the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel
unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be
blessed.
9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with
faithful Abraham.
10 For as many as are of the works of the law are
under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one
that continueth not in all things which are written in
the book of the law to do them.
11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight
of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by
faith.
12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth
them shall live in them.
13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law,
being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed
is every one that hangeth on a tree:
14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the
Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive
the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Having compared the believer’s relationship to God with
that of Israel’s, let us now examine the Ten
Commandments. By God’s grace, let us try to glean some
spiritual truths that they may offer to us; and to do
this, we will give the import of each commandment as it
related to Israel, and then try to correlate its message
to those in Christ.
