Jesus fulfilled all the demands of the Old Covenant for
His people and blotted “out the handwriting of
ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to
us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his
cross.” He also brought His people into a new
relationship with God by establishing the New Covenant.
This New Covenant was “not according to the covenant”
that God made with Israel at Mt. Sinai because that
covenant was ineffective. Israel failed to keep their
obligation under the law and therefore they lost the
promised blessings. What God has provided in Christ is a
“better covenant” “established upon better
promises.”
Col 2:13 And you, being dead in your sins and the
uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together
with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that
was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it
out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
Heb 8:6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent
ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a
better covenant, which was established upon better
promises.
7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then
should no place have been sought for the second.
8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the
days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new
covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of
Judah:
9 Not according to the covenant that I made with
their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to
lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they
continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not,
saith the Lord.
What
then are the major differences between the Old and New
Covenants concerning our present study?
1.
God alone made Himself responsible for the establishing
and the perpetuity of all the conditions of the New
Covenant. Man would no longer have any conditions to
fulfill—that alone does away with much of our modern
philosophy concerning salvation and the Christian life.
The only condition for man’s salvation would be faith in
what God has done in Christ; and even that faith is a
gift of God.
Heb 6:13 For when God made promise to Abraham,
because he could swear by no greater, he sware by
himself,
14 Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and
multiplying I will multiply thee.
15 And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained
the promise.
16 For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for
confirmation is to them an end of all strife.
17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto
the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel,
confirmed it by an oath:
18 That by two immutable things, in which it was
impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong
consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon
the hope set before us:
Gal 3:6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was
accounted to him for righteousness.
7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith,
the same are the children of Abraham.
8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would
justify the heathen through faith, preached before
the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all
nations be blessed.
9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with
faithful Abraham.
10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under
the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that
continueth not in all things which are written in the
book of the law to do them.
11 But that no man is justified by the law in the
sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by
faith.
12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that
doeth them shall live in them.
13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law,
being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is
every one that hangeth on a tree:
14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the
Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the
promise of the Spirit through faith
Tit 3:4 But after that the kindness and love of God our
Saviour toward man appeared,
5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done,
but according to his mercy he saved us, by the
washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ
our Saviour;
7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made
heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
John 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the
vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed
his head, and gave up the ghost.
Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and
that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

The laws of this New Covenant would not be engraved upon
tablets of stone, but upon the hearts of God’s people.
This covenant would no longer be conditioned by a
fleshly obedience to external commandments, but by an
internal love and devotion to God.
Heb 8:10 For this is the covenant that I will make
with the house of Israel after those days, saith the
Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them
in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they
shall be to me a people:
2
Cor 3:3 Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be
the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with
ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in
tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.
God’s Spirit, living in the hearts of His people, would
begin to bear the fruits of this indwelling. The love of
God would now begin to motivate His children to fulfill
the great meaning and purpose behind God’s law.
Rom 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them
which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh,
but after the Spirit.
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath
made me free from the law of sin and death.
3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak
through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the
likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in
the flesh:
4 That the righteousness of the law might be
fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after
the Spirit.
5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things
of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the
things of the Spirit.
6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be
spiritually minded is life and peace.
7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it
is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if
so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any
man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love,
joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Gal 5:6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision
availeth anything, nor uncircumcision; but faith
which worketh by love.
Matt 22:34 But when the Pharisees had heard that he had
put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered
together.
35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a
question, tempting him, and saying,
36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy
God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with
all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love
thy neighbour as thyself.
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and
the prophets.
3.
The blessings of this Covenant can never be lost because
of man’s failure. Israel was driven from the Land of
Promise because they failed to keep the conditions of
the Old Covenant. New Testament believers will never
lose what God has promised, because God cannot fail and
God cannot lie.
1
Pet 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath
begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection
of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and
that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,
5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto
salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
Tit 1:1 Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus
Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the
acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;
2 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot
lie, promised before the world began;
4.
These blessings are greater than the earthly blessings
that God promised to Israel. Their carnal obedience to
the written law only won them temporary blessings. These
Old Covenant blessings were mainly those concerning the
prosperity, security, health, and happiness of Israel on
this earth. New Covenant believers are endowed with the
riches of Christ—inheriting all that is His. Our
heavenly inheritance has been won by Jesus Christ, who
fulfilled all the laws demands and presented us to the
Father as spotless sons of God.
Eph 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual
blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the
foundation of the world, that we should be holy and
without blame before him in love:
5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of
children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to
the good pleasure of his will,
6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he
hath made us accepted in the beloved.
Eph 2:6 And hath raised us up together, and made us
sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
7 That in the ages to come he might shew the
exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us
through Christ Jesus.
Rom 8:32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered
him up for us all, how shall he not with him also
freely give us all things?
5.
This New Covenant has been made available to Jews and
Gentiles alike. The Old Covenant was restricted to the
people of Israel; but now, in Christ, all peoples are
included. Christ broke “down the middle wall of
partition between” Jews and Gentiles. He “abolished
in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments
contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain
one new man.” The sacrifice of Jesus Christ
reconciled “both unto God in one body by the cross,
having slain the enmity thereby.”
Eph 2:11 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time
past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called
Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision
in the flesh made by hands;
12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being
aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers
from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and
without God in the world:
13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far
off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and
hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;
15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the
law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make
in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;
16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one
body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:
17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar
off, and to them that were nigh.
18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit
unto the Father.
19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and
foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of
the household of God;
Therefore, having seen the superiority of what we have
in Christ, the question that begs to be answered is—‘Why
do well-meaning Christians continue to want to make that
Old Covenant a part of the New.’ Even Jesus taught
that everyday sense dictates that we do not put “new
cloth unto an old garment” or “new wine into old
bottles.” God did not revamp the Old Covenant to
make it more effective—He made an entirely New Covenant.
There are many figures, or types of Christ to be found
in the Old Testament, but they are only shadows of what
God has done in the New. There are many prophecies in
the Old Testament that point us to Christ; but once
Christ came, they were fulfilled. Someone has said
“The Old Testament is Christ concealed; the New
Testament is Christ revealed.” Why, however, do we
continue to want to live with shadows when we can
have the real substance—Christ? Why do we
continue to want to mix the works of the Old
Covenant with the grace of the New? The answer to
these and other similar questions is unbelief. We refuse
to believe that what God has provided for us in Christ
is all of grace. We still hold on to our old fleshly
struggles attempting to please God and have our
human works count for something. Israel failed to obtain
all the blessings that God had for them because of
unbelief, and so do we as Christians.
Matt 9:16 No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an
old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up
taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse.
17 Neither do men put new wine into old bottles:
else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and
the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new
bottles, and both are preserved.
Heb 10:1 For the law having a shadow of good things
to come, and not the very image of the things, can
never with those sacrifices which they offered year by
year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.
1
Pet 1:10 Of which salvation the prophets have inquired
and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace
that should come unto you:
11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of
Christ which was in them did signify, when it
testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the
glory that should follow.
12 Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto
themselves, but unto us they did minister the things,
which are now reported unto you by them that have
preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent
down from heaven; which things the angels desire to
look into.
Rom 11:6 And if by grace, then is it no more of
works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of
works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no
more work.
Gal 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law
are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is
every one that continueth not in all things which are
written in the book of the law to do them.
11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight
of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by
faith.
12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that
doeth them shall live in them.
Heb 4:1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being
left us of entering into his rest, any of you should
seem to come short of it.
2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto
them: but the word preached did not profit them, not
being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
3 For we which have believed do enter into rest,
as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall
enter into my rest: although the works were finished
from the foundation of the world.
Heb 4:9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people
of God.
10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath
ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest,
lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.
