The
fourth commandment concerned the keeping of the Sabbath
day or days that were given to Israel. Although Saturday
is the traditional Jewish weekly Sabbath, other
religious holidays, including the Passover, were also
considered Sabbath or holy days. This is one reason why
there is so much confusion about what day Christ was
crucified on. He, of course, was crucified on Wednesday,
not Good Friday as is traditionally worshipped. This
came about because of the confusion over the Passover
Sabbath and the Saturday Sabbath. However, every Sabbath
had the same restrictions—there was to be no work done
by anyone, including servants and animals. There was
also a Sabbath every seventh year in which they were not
to do any planting or harvesting. Also, every seventh
seventh year (forty-nine years) was the year of Jubilee;
all debts were to be canceled, land was be returned to
its tribal owners, and all servants were to be freed.
The weekly Sabbath commemorated God’s rest after the six
days of Creation and was given as a special sign to the
children of Israel. It was meant to show honor to the
Creator, but was also given as a blessing to Israel. God
would give them a day of rest and supply all their needs
by His goodness toward them. This law was to be strictly
observed upon penalty of death; and Scriptures record at
least one instance where someone was stoned for breaking
this commandment.
Exo 20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy
God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy
son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy
maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is
within thy gates:
11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the
sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh
day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and
hallowed it.
Exo 31:13 Speak thou also unto the children of Israel,
saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a
sign between me and you throughout your generations;
that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify
you.
14 Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy
unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be
put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein,
that soul shall be cut off from among his people.
15 Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is
the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth
any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to
death.
16 Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep
the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their
generations, for a perpetual covenant.
17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel
for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and
earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was
refreshed.
Gen 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished,
and all the host of them.
2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he
had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his
work which he had made.
3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it:
because that in it he had rested from all his work which
God created and made.
Num 15:32 And while the children of Israel were in
the wilderness, they found a man that gathered sticks
upon the sabbath day.
33 And they that found him gathering sticks brought him
unto Moses and Aaron, and unto all the congregation.
34 And they put him in ward, because it was not declared
what should be done to him.
35 And the LORD said unto Moses, The man shall be
surely put to death: all the congregation shall stone
him with stones without the camp.
36 And all the congregation brought him without the
camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died; as the
LORD commanded Moses.
Eze 20:10 Wherefore I caused them to go forth out of the
land of Egypt, and brought them into the wilderness.
11 And I gave them my statutes, and shewed them my
judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in
them.
12 Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a
sign between me and them, that they might know that I am
the LORD that sanctify them.
13 But the house of Israel rebelled against me in
the wilderness: they walked not in my statutes, and they
despised my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even
live in them; and my sabbaths they greatly polluted:
then I said, I would pour out my fury upon them in the
wilderness, to consume them.
Among Christian believers there exists a great deal of
confusion about the Sabbath day commandment. For those
who believe in a strict interpretation of the Ten
Commandments, Saturday has always been, and will always
be the Sabbath God gave to Israel. Because Christ arose
on Sunday, and there are references to the early Church
meeting together on Sunday, many have adopted this day
as the Christian Sabbath. However, the New Testament
teaches that there isn’t any more Sabbath or holy days
to those who are in Christ. Those days were only shadows
of what God would accomplish for His people in Christ.
To believers, Christ is our Sabbath because we rest in
His finished work. We no longer toil to be accepted with
God, but we enter into His rest when we trust in what
Jesus has done for us. Of course, God designed our
bodies to have a day of rest, and those who toil seven
days a week are in for some serious emotional and
physical problems. Also, there is nothing to be said
against gathering for worship on Sunday or any other day
for that matter. Christians are told not to forsake the
assembling of themselves together, but much more so as
we see the approach of our Lord’s coming again.
Matt 28:1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to
dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary
Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.
2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the
angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and
rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.
3 His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment
white as snow:
4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became
as dead men.
5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear
not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was
crucified.
6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come,
see the place where the Lord lay.
Acts 20:7 And upon the first day of the week, when
the disciples came together to break bread, Paul
preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and
continued his speech until midnight.
Rom 14:5 One man esteemeth one day above another:
another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be
fully persuaded in his own mind.
6 He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto
the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord
he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the
Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not,
to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.
Col 2:16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or
in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new
moon, or of the sabbath days:
17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the
body is of Christ.
Matt 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are
heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am
meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto
your souls.
Heb 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves
together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one
another: and so much the more, as ye see the day
approaching.
John 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I
will come again, and receive you unto myself; that
where I am, there ye may be also.
The
problem for those in Christ is when we disregard our
Sabbath in Christ and begin again to do things in the
flesh as our means of trying to please God or doing
works for God. Furthermore, those who view keeping the
Law as a way to gain merit with God have not fully
apprehended grace. The purpose of the Lord’s Supper is
that we might remember that His blood paid our sin debt
and His body gives us life by abiding in Him. When we no
longer keep our Sabbath holy we are breaking this
Commandment of Grace. Those who do so will find that
their spiritual
life begins to dry up and they begin to face the
chastening hand of God for their error.
Gal 3:1 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you,
that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes
Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified
among you?
2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the
Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of
faith?
3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit,
are ye now made perfect by the flesh?
Luke 22:19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake
it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which
is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.
20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This
cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for
you.
John 6:51 I am the living bread which came down from
heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for
ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which
I will give for the life of the world.
52 The Jews therefore strove among themselves,
saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?
53 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say
unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and
drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
54 Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath
eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
55 For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink
indeed.
56 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood,
dwelleth in me, and I in him.
John 15:4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch
cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the
vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that
abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth
much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a
branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast
them into the fire, and they are burned.
Heb 3:7 Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye
will hear his voice,
8 Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the
day of temptation in the wilderness:
9 When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my
works forty years.
10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and
said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have
not known my ways.
11 So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into
my rest.)
12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you
an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living
God.
13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To
day; lest any of you be hardened through the
deceitfulness of sin.
14 For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold
the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;
15 While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice,
harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.
16 For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit
not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.
17 But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not
with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the
wilderness?
18 And to whom sware he that they should not enter
into his rest, but to them that believed not?
19 So we see that they could not enter in because of
unbelief.
Heb 4:1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being
left us of entering into his rest, any of you should
seem to come short of it.
2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as
unto them: but the word preached did not profit them,
not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
3 For we which have believed do enter into rest,
as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall
enter into my rest: although the works were finished
from the foundation of the world.
4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on
this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his
works.
5 And in this place again, If they shall enter into my
rest.
6 Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter
therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered
not in because of unbelief:
7 Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To
day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye
will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
8 For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not
afterward have spoken of another day.
9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of
God.
10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also
hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that
rest, lest any man fall after the same example of
unbelief.
Are
we saying then that Christians are to do nothing but go
and sit on a mountain to await His return?—absolutely
not. We understand that God has given us a ministry to
perform as we await our Lord from Heaven. The issues
are: (1) What is the motivation for our serving
Christ—our self-righteousness and self-glory, or our
love for Christ and His glory? (2) Whose will and work
are we doing—our own fleshly purposes and plans or God’s
will? (3) Whose power are we laboring under—the strength
of the flesh or the power of Almighty God? When we do
God’s will, laboring under His power, and with the love
of Christ in our hearts, we will find that our Sabbath
of rest is unbroken.

Cor 1:29 That no flesh should glory in his presence.
30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is
made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and
sanctification, and redemption:
31 That, according as it is written, He that glorieth,
let him glory in the Lord.
Phil 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always
obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in
my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and
trembling.
13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will
and to do of his good pleasure.
2
Cor 10:3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not
war after the flesh:
4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but
mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing
that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and
bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience
of Christ;
Isa 58:13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath,
from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call
the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable;
and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor
finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own
words:
14 Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I
will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the
earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy
father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
